Laura Potter’s project for Means of Production further developed an earlier series of her work which referenced medicinal and pharmaceutical production.  Potter decided to work with the Margaret Pyke Family Planning Clinic to investigate women’s perception of the Intra-Uterine Device (IUD) and whether it could be considered as a form of ‘internal jewellery’.  She worked with the clinic on a questionnaire which was intended to gauge women’s emotional and intuitive responses to IUDs, rather than gathering ‘straight’ scientific data.

In response to her findings, Potter produced eight pieces of jewellery which explored the links between women’s relationships with jewellery worn externally and contraceptive devices such as IUDs.  A further outcome of the project was a limited edition book, containing details of the research process, questionnaire outcomes and illustrations of the jewellery.

This project is part of the Means of Production Initiative, led by Modus Operandi.
