The Phoenix Initiative Public Art Strategy

The Phoenix Initiative was a major inner-city regeneration project for Coventry city centre, which included integrating the works of seven artists and a poet within a series of new spaces.  The Public Art Strategy created by Modus Operandi identified the scope for artists’ involvement, inspired by the theme of communication.  Guided by Modus Operandi, a Public Art Panel of stakeholders selected the artists.  Engagement and consultation was undertaken with Warwick and Coventry Universities, the Cathedral, the Interfaith Centre and local schools.

The project has won many awards and reached the Stirling Prize short-list in 2004, the first time that a public space/public art scheme has been short-listed; it received the UN International Award for the most liveable city in 2005 and the BURA Award for regeneration in 2006.
