Marunouchi Project Public Art Policy, Tokyo

The Marunouchi Building was designed as a mixed-use flagship development to regenerate both the Marunouchi business district in Tokyo and the headquarters of the Mitsubishi Estate Company Ltd.  The client decided to celebrate the scheme through a programme of international art commissions.  Modus Operandi was appointed to work with the client to produce a Public Art Policy that analysed the site in terms of predicted usage, visibility and footfall in order to identify appropriate locations for new commissions.  Modus Operandi’s curatorial approach focused on the concept of the ‘ideal place’, and the role played by the natural world within the urban setting.  Five artists were appointed through direct selection and invited competition, Kisa Kawakami having already been appointed to the project as advisory artist-architect.
