Since its re-opening in 2006, the Roundhouse has re-established itself as one of Europe’s most dynamic performance spaces and a creative centre for young people.  This major redevelopment project provided the opportunity for an artist's involvement.  The commission brief called for a work that would help attract people to the building, be in harmony with or a counter-point to the architecture, and enrich the visual and cultural experience both of those using the building and passing by.

Antony Gormley was selected for his site-specific proposal of a figure located on the roof of the building. You was the precursor for Gormley's subsequent serial installation of figure sculptures on the rooftops in the vicinity of the Hayward Gallery in 2007.

The Roundhouse, designed by John McAslan and Partners, was a winner  of the RIBA London Award 2007, the RIBA National Award 2007 and short-listed for the RIBA Client of the Year 2007.  It was also the winner of The Crown Estate Conservation Award 2007.
