Sackville Street

Modus Operandi was appointed to advise on potential opportunities for including art within the redevelopment of 9 – 15 Sackville Street, London.  Artist Rebecca Salter was selected to develop a series of designs that were screenprinted onto two faces of the building's ground floor double-glazed windows, and onto a bronze screen.  Salter's aim was to introduce a ‘touch of the human hand' through her use of the drawn line, creating a dialogue with the mathematical symmetry of the architectural façade.

My approach envisaged the facade as a canvas and considered it as a whole. My aim was to weave detail into the skeleton/framework provided by the proportions and layout of the Georgian facade. An original ink drawing was created to form a dialogue between the ‘drawn’ line and the elegant symmetry of the building. The drawing was reinterpreted for each element of the scheme. This gives the building a strong identity from a distance, and provides interest close-to.’ Rebecca Salter
