New Bond Street

The development company for Scottish Widows appointed Modus Operandi to advise on the opportunities for public art for two adjacent redevelopment schemes at St George Street/Maddox Street and at New Bond Street/Maddox Street, both designed by Eric Parry Architects.


Martin Richman’s illumination scheme harnesses the simple intervention of controlled and programmed white light.  Luminaires have been discreetly mounted to focus attention on and illuminate the projecting faience 'ribbon' decoration, a prominent architectural feature of the building.  Each lamp was separately wired to allow individual control of any given light, and to offer a wide variety of potential illuminated sequences.  The light scheme emphasises the building’s decorative and architectural qualities rather than detracting from them.
