As the result of an invited competition, artist Pat Kaufman was selected to develop designs for an artwork as part of the entrance to Imperial College’s new sports centre designed by Arup Associates.

The walkway and façade of the building, along with its day and night time functions, all presented potential starting points.  Kaufman created a design for the Centre's external glass balustrade which references the velocity wave patterns of the College’s different sporting activities.  During the design process Kaufman collaborated with scientists at Imperial College, drawing on their research into velocity wave patterns to inform her design.  The artwork uses a new technique, developed by Kaufman, of infilled lines in resin and gold leaf, lit by white LEDs.
