Vong Phaophanit and Claire Oboussier were commissioned by Modus Operandi to develop an artwork for the main atrium of City and Islington College’s Centre for Lifelong Learning developed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. The resulting work, Pipedream, consists of an extensive sculpture of blue neon tubes ‘floating’ on different levels through the front atrium to the back wall, where the sculpture transforms into a column of red neon, which ascends the second atrium.  Inhabiting the space at different levels, the floating sculpture creates a feeling of space and scale.

Pipedream evolved out of the very particular anatomy of City and Islington College, reflecting the circulatory systems of plumbing, electricity, heating and communications, as well as the flow of people that move around the building on a daily basis.

This work is part of the City & Islington College Art Strategy.
